Rosslee were awarded the contract to deliver a dual-scope heritage and community project at Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, comprising the demolition and replacement of the existing bowls pavilion alongside the refurbishment and repair of the park’s Grade II listed bandstand. Working in a conservation area and in partnership with Todmorden Town Council and wider Town Deal stakeholders, we helped safeguard two much-loved local assets while improving facilities for sport, leisure and community events.
The new bowling pavilion, set beside the park’s four bowling greens, is a steel-frame structure finished with scorched timber cladding and a stone plinth, arranged over two levels with upper-floor storage. Internally it provides a flexible main room with large windows and bi-fold doors overlooking the greens, plus a stainless-steel catering kitchen with serving hatch, accessible WC, plant room and stores.
Rooflights maximise daylight, while underfloor heating served by an air source heat pump supports comfort and efficiency. A deep overhanging roof is finished in natural slate and fitted with PV solar panels to help reduce long-term running costs. Access was enhanced through new stone walling, stepped approaches and an entrance ramp.
In parallel, we undertook extensive repairs to the 1914 Edwardian bandstand—recognised for its rarity and cited as the sole remaining example of its kind in England—including timber and roof works, a new stage floor with upgraded power, new lighting and CCTV, an accessible WC, and full redecoration. Heritage-quality materials were incorporated, including a stainless-steel roof finish and durable Accoya timber elements.
Social value included our Contracts Manager attending a Careers Talk in April 25, and supporting Buttress Architects to engage Todmorden High School pupils through site visits during construction.
