Rosslee were awarded the contract to undertake repairs and alterations at The Exchange, with the aim of creating a new main entrance, improving accessibility throughout the building, and carrying out essential roof works to support future phases of development. The contract was delivered within key areas of the building to enable it to be safely occupied by the public and to allow events to be held within the venue.
Externally, works included the installation of new timber windows and aluminium entrance doors to the drum entrance, creating an attractive and welcoming main access point. A new timber fire escape was constructed to the Drummers Arms courtyard, while existing windows within the courtyard were repaired or replaced where required. Extensive roofing repairs were completed, including the installation of new rooflights along the 1920s extension, the construction of a new roof structure to the rear of the extension, and essential repairs to gutters and adjoining roof areas to ensure the building remained weatherproof and fit for future works.
Internally, Rosslee transformed the main entrance area by creating a new entrance leading down to Level 00, constructing a bespoke feature staircase providing access to Level 02, and forming a new entrance to the lift shaft, allowing access to all existing floors and accommodating future expansion. Existing masonry was carefully cleaned and restored, preserving key heritage features while creating a welcoming entrance lobby.
New public toilet facilities were created on Levels 00 and 02, complete with new mechanical and electrical services and high-quality finishes throughout. Within the main hall, a new temporary lobby was installed to improve security and provide the necessary fire compartmentation.
As part of the project, all new services were installed and tested to current standards, with Building Control approving the completed works. The materials selected throughout the project were low maintenance, requiring only routine cleaning to maintain their appearance. Existing asbestos information was retained for future reference, with any future works required to consult the existing asbestos survey before commencing.
