Rosslee were awarded the contract to build a new single storey extension on top of a 2 storey building, along with a 3 storey in-fill extension at the far end of the school.
The roof top extension was done first, a timber frame building build on top of the existing concrete structure, with an EWI render system to the outside, with aluminium windows. The internals were timber stud and plasterboard walls, new fire doors and screens, suspended ceiling grids, and fully decorated and floored throughout. The existing external metal fire escape was extended up another floor to allow egress from the new extension.
Once the roof top extension was done, this allowed the second area of works to be decanted into it to allow the new in-fill extension to be built, with the demolition of some existing structure. The in-fill extension was a steel frame, with suspended metal deck and concrete floors, a block and brick external cavity wall, which received some new windows and reusing existing windows from the areas being demolished.
The extension had metal stud and plasterboard partitions where needed, the M+E services were extended into the area, and all rooms received new decorations and flooring. The ground floor had the biggest layout change, which had a new toilet village, and a larger food tech classroom formed.
Programming of the works was key, as the first extension had to be completed before the demolition of the external walls could take place, to allow the second area of works to progress. The demolition was also crucial to be done at the summer break, as due to the existing building structure, the noise and mess would mean the school could not operate.
“From the start until the end of the project communication was excellent. Site team was outstanding and understood about working in a school with pupils and staff onsite. Applied to all safeguarding procedures, which made this easy for the school. All staff were helpful, polite and hard working. Would have no hesitation to work with Rosslee again.” Paula Iqbal
